Unlike entry-level network attached storage (NAS) arrangements that host the operating system on an individual drive, the NSS6100 contains its own Linux OS. This allows it to be reconfigured at any time, even without connected drives. This architecture, including four 250GB hard drives, makes the NSS6100 ideally suited for growing companies.

Additional features of the Cisco Network Storage System NSS6100 include:

• A four-drive bay network storage system chassis supporting RAID 0/1/1+Spare/5/5+Spare/10 and file encryption (preconfigured to RAID 5)
• Microsoft Distributed File System support and network virtualization of RAID sets across multiple NAS devices (requires at least 1 NSS6000/6100)
• Data protection and security features including On Disk File Encryption (AES), VLANs, SMART Drive support, file journaling, Global Spares, and Snap Shot
• Dual gigabit LAN interfaces supporting VLANs, QoS, Link Aggregation, and Spanning Tree
